Stories of a rewarding India experience

Written by Emily Clarke - GapBreak India, 2009

Working at the day-care was a different experience and although our first teaching experience was difficult, the second school we taught at was really good. Our general lessons consisted of basic conversation such as ‘What is your name?’ with the rest of days filled up with games, songs and basic vocab, such as colours and animals, finishing off with arts and crafts. What made school so good, was knowing that the kids were always excited to see us and we would usually have a small amount who would be waiting for us to arrive & play games with them till the rest of our class arrived. Teaching was very fulfilling. I loved it and everything about it. It was a great experience.

There was also the Orphanage and my 3rd and 4th grade boys. I found this to be one of the most rewarding things about my whole time in India. Having the little day care kids, who seemed a lot more interested in playing than learning, and having third and fourth grade boys who wanted to learn and were happy to teach you Hindi in exchange for English, was a very good experience.

Our last lesson, we made them little postcards with pictures of Australia on them and gave them to the boys. They were so delighted, showing them off to the rest of the Orphanage boys as if they were awards or trophies. It felt nice to know we’ve made an impact on these boys’ lives. Teaching at the orphanage is really is one of the best aspects of the whole project. I loved teaching there, it was absolutely amazing and knowing that we taught those boys something that will last is a really brilliant feeling.

The In-country agent is a brilliant they really made my time in India enjoyable. I found Himanshu to be a lovely, albeit quiet, man and one of the nicest men I’ve ever met. He was brilliant to talk to and would listen to you if you had any suggestions for the house or any other aspect of the program. He does his best to keep all volunteers safe and sound He commands great respect and I thoroughly respect what he is doing in the Udaipur and Bedla community. He really helped me and took care of all of us in my time there.

¬The whole experience was brilliant and I’m truly thankful to get the opportunity to go to India and do what I did. I absolutely loved it and had an absolutely brilliant time there! I can’t wait to go back again!

Also, thanks to you guys at Antips for all the support you gave us and for actually enabling me to go in the first place. It was a superb thing to do, I loved it.
