From Moshi to Tanga - GapBreak volunteers settle into life in Tanzania

Africa is great! On the 01/09/2011 we all met at the Keys Hotel in Moshi. We were then taken around the local town by one of our carers; Eliphas. The next day after a delicious spaghetti bolognaise lunch-4 English girls, 1 German girl, 8 Australian girls and 1 lucky Australian boy boarded the bus for a 6 hour journey to a village just outside Tanga-the place we will call "home" for the next 12 weeks.

We were greeted by Tommie and Anderson who settled us into our camp overlooking the Indian Ocean (a view I'm sure we can all get used to). After sussing our the nearest place to buy a chocolate banana split, our first week was largley focussed on building a kitchen out of sand, mud and bambo for a man who became paralysed two years ago.

A few of us also taught some basic English to the villagers (ageing between 12-35). Everyone is so nice and friendly. We are being looked after with 3 meals each day to provide us with the energy we need to work for four hours. On Mondays and Thursdays we are also given Swahili lessons.

Wednesday is our movie night and to kick off our first movie night was..surprise surprise, The Lion King! In summary, it has been a big week-building huts, teaching English and entertaining the village children. We are all hanging out for the 10.09.2011, as we are going to the nearest supermarket in town to stock up on junk food (it has been a very long 9 days without it!).
