Tanzania GapBreak volunteers get a taste of Kenya

Jambo from Tsavo!

Yes, we finally made it to Kenya! We spent our first night relaxing at the beautiful tourist destination Diani Beach; crystal clear water, white sand, a bar on the beach...paradise! By the next morning we were back on the bus for a long drive to Camp Tsavo. When we finally arrived, we were greeted by 6 people other volunteers whom we were to spend the next two weeks with. For the next two days we worked on building a kitchen for a woman who is a member of the local women's group.

Thursday, was by far the highlight of this week! On Thursday we went on our first Safari to Tsavo East National Park (An area of 13747km sq). We ran from one side of the bus to the other taking photographs of elephants, giraffes, buffalos, zebras and even lions! It was such a surreal experience to see these native African animals in the wild.
Tonight (Saturday) to say we are exhausted is an understatement. At 9am this morning we began our climb up Mt Kasighau. After a steep 4 hr climb we eventually made it to the summit and experienced a breathtaking view of the Kenyan lands. The descent of the mountain was the most interesting-with every person having their own story to tell. I will say that due to the rain, climbing down the mountain was more like sliding down a mud slide.
Emilie for example, somehow arrived at the bottom of the mountain with not only a massive rip in her pants but also in her underpants. Georgia made it down with every inch of her body COVERED in mud. I lost my balance and started sliding down the mountain...only to be stopped by a fallen down tree.

I was also told to give a special mention to Taylor, Ash and Chloe who made it down the mountain with a few scratches and bruises but still smiling! The crew climbing Mt Kili also decided to re-asses their decision. Next week Georgia, Sophie and I will embark on the climb whilst the rest of the crew will be living it up in Zanzibar. I'm quite sure there won't be an Internet cafe at the top of Kili, so will have to update in a few weeks!

Missing you all, Bridget.
