India GapBreak students get stuck into rural teaching projects

COUNTRY: India
PROGRAM: GapBreak
PROJECT: Teaching
WRITTEN BY: Sarah Raine & Antips in India

Everyone is settling into the house very well, it really makes a difference when we have each other to adjust with, we have had a few people feeling a little sick but nothing serious.

School was great the kids are so full of energy and smiles, their colourful personalities makes our lessons very fun - such as singing 'Old McDonald' and making exciting new noises of camels and tigers and lizzards. Heading over to the orphanage offers an easy escape of playing sport, the boys are very competitive but we all have had a great time playing some PE favourites of dodgeball, skipping and European handball.

Over this weekend we took a day trip to Kambhalgarh Fort and Ranakpur Jain Temple. The 36km long fort wall was amazingly, still intact and topped with a large fort filled with secret passageways leading to platforms decorated with sculpted windows and beautiful views across the temples. The Jain temple is one of the biggest in Rajasthan and is held up by 1444 pillars all beautifully designed made of marble. No 2 are alike! We even got a guided tour with the high priest of the temple which was amazing.

On Sunday Robyn turned 19, so we spent the day exploring Udiapur and in the evening we visited the beautiful Monsoon Palace on the tops of the mountains. The Monsoon Palace looks down over the town and used to be a hunting lodge with pumas and sloth bears. In the evening we also saw a traditional dance and puppet show, it was amazing how the women managed to balance 9 vases on their heads yet still swiftly turn and dance!

Hope everything is well in Sydney!

Thanks
Sarah & the Antips
