Busy week of construction in Cuzco, Peru

COUNTRY: Peru
PROGRAM: UniBreak
PROJECT: Teaching & Construction
WRITTEN BY: Katie Bergan

This week was a bit of a blur for me. We began proper construction of the greenhouse for the school, greeted with at least a daily drizzle of rain, sometimes a lot more. We laid down foundation (in cement and rocks) and started to build a wall with mud bricks and mud. It now sort of looks like a building, its well on its way. Working in the rain is hard and I definitely wouldn’t say its ‘light’ manual labour (everybody is super dead by the end of the day!).

As far as teaching goes we have been split into 3 teaching groups: English, Art and Sport. Everyone is having so much fun making up lesson plans, teaching the kids to dance Bhangra style, doing the hokey pokey and making potato stamps. The kids are so excited for each new lesson (one time they chanted “Artes! Artes!” all the way to class). They like to put Papa and Mama in front of all our names (such cuties).

This weekend we went to sacred valley and saw some beautiful ruins and artifacts. The mountains seem like backdrops, just unbelievable really. Bring your student card for discounts on entry to the ruins!
