STD, Cancer and Amputation Education all in a days work

COUNTRY: Cambodia
PROGRAM: UniBreak
PROJECT: Community Healthcare & Teaching
WRITTEN BY: Amarah Norris

We have almost reached the end of our placement which makes us all a bit sad! This week in our health promotion classes we covered STDs, cancer, amputated limb care, first aid and mental health. We've been trying to use as many visual aids as possible which seems to help a lot with teaching. After our morning classes are over each day Jenna, Luke, Sarah and I have been cleaning out the library so we're looking forward to completing that before we leave! Luke and I teach the older kids in the afternoons (they are 11 - 19 years old) and they're progressing quite well. They love games so we've been making up some educational English games to play with the material we've just taught. We've done basic phrases, body parts, colours, family members, animals, clothes and numbers. Jenna and Sarah are teaching the younger children (under 11) and have found that songs are really helpful with getting them to remember words and phrases. They've been teaching basic phrases, body parts and food.

Tate, Nikita, Jacqui, Becky, Sal, Hannah and Derek have completed assessments of every single house which has never been done by a group before! They have been treating people that require therapy at their homes or booking them into the clinic and treating them there. The physios were also able to get some necessities for the families from the market today and are looking over the requirements of each house so we can distribute everything next week. Exercise sheets for specific areas of pain such as lower back or hip were made up by the physio group and have just been translated to Khmer so they will also be distributed to those who require them.

For most of us it is our last weekend in Cambodia so we're all trying to make the most of it and fit in everything we haven't yet gotten to do. It's hard to believe that this time next week we'll be packing up to go home! We have some fun things planned for MHDC next week which you'll get to read about in next weeks blog:)

Thanks!
