Understanding the needs of the locals: UniBreak Cambodia

COUNTRY: Cambodia
PROGRAM: UniBreak
PROJECT: Community Healthcare & Teaching
WRITTEN BY: Amarah Norris

We're already half way through our trip! I didn't believe anyone when they said it would go quickly but it seems to be flashing before my eyes. We really got into the swing of things in regards to our placements this week; Luke, Jenna, Sarah and I teach an adult health promotion class in the mornings and English to the kids in the afternoon. We have made big advances as both groups are so eager to learn from us and make us feel really welcome.

Hannah, Sally, Nikita, Jacqui, Laura, Becky, Tate and Derek split up between the clinic and visiting the houses each day and they've been getting a much deeper understanding about the health and living needs of the residents. Assessments are made at each house visit and those with a higher demand for medical attention are referred to the clinic. Jacqui and Nikita were kind enough to give a talk to our health promotion classes on stroke, which is a pretty big issue at MHDC. We're hoping to borrow a bit more of the physios' time in another health class as they were a hit with the students!

Most of us arrived in Phnom Penh on Thursday night except for Luke, who met up with a friend in Bangkok. After seeing the Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum yesterday we're looking forward to a pretty relaxing weekend!

More next week,

Amarah
