Home visits warm hearts in Cambodia
COUNTRY: Cambodia
PROGRAM: UniBreak Groups
PROJECT: Education
WRITTEN BY: Sophie Turner
As the saying goes 'Time flies when your enjoying yourself' so it's no surprise we are already in week 2 and half way through our volunteer teaching placement. The past week has brought us a mixture of both delights and challenges, as we continue to work hard as a team on our collaborative photo-book project, and teach English despite several bouts of sickness in the group. Lisa our Volunteer Coordinator at the school, has taken to doing a daily head count as invariably each day we have been down at least one member. On Tuesday poor Lauren had to spend a night at the International Hospital due to an acute case of gastro, but was looked after superbly their staff and the lovely Davy.
On a more cheerful note, we have all been so fortunate as to a have a host of unique experiences this week including visiting some of the children's homes in the village. It was positively heart-warming hearing them translate personally their reasons for choosing to photograph a member of their family, their home or theirs friends and what this meant to them.
Other highlights included elephant rides through Bayon temple, visiting the Tomb Raider temple Ta Prohm, a fantastic local Khmer cooking class and attending one of the school teachers' sister's traditional Cambodian Wedding at At Tra Peang Village.
