Progress in Peru - Students Build a Greenhouse & Visit Machu Picchu

COUNTRY: Peru
PROGRAM: UniBreak
PROJECT: Teaching & Construction
WRITTEN BY: Katie Bergan

It rained a lot this week and so work was limited, but we managed to get the greenhouse finished. It was definitely the most complicated week of construction so far, with measurements, angles and plenty of brick laying. It felt really good to finally have something to show for our aching limbs. Classes were well managed and the kids are always happy to see us.

In English we taught body parts, in sport we taught some soccer skills and played some frisbee and in art we made decorations for Christmas. The children love to sing, so the promise of ‘the hokey pokey’ or ‘the wheel on the bus’ at the end of class always got a good reaction.

On the weekend the group split in two, with half going to Machu Picchu. It was an overnight visit so they had time to go to the hot springs and were able to climb Huayna Picchu. Although the trek was challenging the sights were amazing as the morning fog cleared (like a polaroid picture coming into focus) to reveal the spectacular mountains and ruins. The other half of the group went white water rafting through the Urubamba River and then quad biked through Moras to see Moray and the salt flats. It was a pretty amazing weekend for everyone.

Notes on travel plans: anything around the main plaza is usually safe to book through. Be cautious with super cheap deals and ensure that whatever you are doing has a level of safety.
