Time in Nepal is flexible as a Yoga Master
COUNTRY: Nepal - Pokhara
PROGRAM: UniBreak
PROJECT: Community Healthcare, Teaching
WRITTEN BY: Divya Venkataraman
Hello avid readers- or should I say, hello Mum and Dad- here’s a quick update on the goings on over the past week. The January Unibreak team in Pokhara has had a busy week! However, we’ve also settled into somewhat of a routine at the settlement, becoming well acquainted with the daily customs of life and the frustrating concept of time in Nepal- as flexible as a yoga master.
The group headed out to Chitwan National Park on the weekend, about six hours from Pokhara. There we went on a tour of a local village and experienced a cultural dance show complete with a highly unrealistic stuffed peacock (which some unnamed members of the group fell asleep during). We also went on a canoe ride down the river, which culminated in a speedy U-turn as soon as a large wild elephant was spotted on the riverside further down! The most uncomfortable but incredible part of the trip however was a four-hour open top jeep safari in the pouring rain. While we (being the wildlife experts we are) concluded that most of the animals were sheltering from the rain, we nevertheless spotted many deer, monkeys, and even a bison and sloth bear once the sun came out!
Some other notable events of the week included some of the girls attending an authentic Nepali wedding in the middle of the street during which we were made to dance in front of the guests, Jess and Hayley having a birthday party in their Tibetan household and other group members climbing up to the Peace Pagoda by the lake.
Keep reading for more updates!
