Wheelbarrows, dirt and volleyball. Week two at Camp Tanzania!

COUNTRY: Tanzania
PROGRAM: GapBreak
PROJECT: Building, renovation & conservation
WRITTEN BY: Tanzania Gappers 2012

It's been an eventful two weeks at camp Tanzania. We began project work last week, using pick axes to lift sand, shoveling it into bags and using wheelbarrows to take it into the village.

Little did we realise what is considered a /wheelbarrow here takes 6 people to push! Steven and Hugh were the first to jump into the the giant hole we were digging from, followed by Lauren while Lizzie and Kaitlyn were too scared at the possibility of getting stuck down there to get in.

We had our first African clubbing experience which was a lot of fun and we spent a lot of time at the beach.

Lizzie and Kaitlyn taught English to the villagers under a mango tree in the first week and Hugh and Lauren had a go this past week. We spent this week mixing the sand we made into mud (a process Steven particularly enjoyed) and throwing it at the walls of an unfinished house.

We've had a bit of competition too, with an intense trivia night on Tuesday and the big volleyball match on Thursday. The other group that has been staying at the camp had been working on putting a sports tournament together for two of the schools in the area and invited us to play them in volleyball.

Although a bit nervous when seeing just how many students were watching, team gappers won the match! We farewelled the Sports Development Expedition crew with a fancy dress barbeque last night. We were sad to see them go but are looking forward to more work on the houses and are hoping the sun stays out for us!

  1. A wheelbarrow pushed by 6 people? That sounds like gigantic to me. The beaches in Tanzania are great. I wonder what beach you guys went?
