Health Promotion & Phnom Penh
COUNTRY: Cambodia
PROGRAM: UniBreak
PROJECT: Health & Education
WRITTEN BY: Leah Daniels
Throughout the past weeks, the international volunteers teachers have been at the classroom, teaching adults’ health promotion in the mornings. This includes basic first aid, wound healing, proper hygiene etc. We then have our big lunch break together and discuss what we have done and any ideas of what our project should be. After this the health students go to the homes while the volunteering teachers split up into pairs and teach the children English (older, middle and younger children classes).
On the Tuesday this week we had a community meeting which had a much bigger turn out than expected, with 100+ turning up when we were expecting 40-60 people. It was great to get their opinions and ideas about how to improve MHDC. Mary-Ann and Pat, two of the volunteers, did a great job of presenting and I'm sure inspiring many individuals in the crowd.
While doing the home visits we came across a house that had been extended and developed with many crops and animals. It was great to see what could be possible for the very basic house that the families were put in, and it gave us hope for the other individuals that they may be able to expand theirs over the years to come.
On Friday we caught the sleeping bus to Phnom Penh, which we had little sleep on so by the next day all of the volunteers were exhausted. We had a bit of a nap and then went to the killing fields and S-21 which we all found very confronting. We went out to dinner for Lia's birthday, lit some sparklers and had an early night due to fatigue and sickness. The next day we had breakfast which Toni was a bit disappointed for as the raisin bread was just normal toast, and had a rushed market browse. Some of us bought some platinum gold necklaces for ourselves whilst others got Christmas presents for others. We would have liked to spend a lot longer in Phnom Penh and all agreed that we are very likely coming back within the next years to explore Phnom Penh and Cambodia ever more.
Not long left now,
Leah and the November Group
