Canberra Girls Grammar make headlines in India!
Canberra Girls Grammar School recently arrived back from their 25 day expedition to India. One of the highlights for the team was their community project. The "A Team" did their community project with the Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) in Kalimpong.
The TWA have a small community hall, which is the central place that the Tibetan women in the Kalimpong community gather, but also plays host to many other community events. Last year, there was an earthquake in the region, which badly damaged the building. The Tibetan women wanted to repair and renovate this building and then white wash the walls.
This project was coordinated by the local Tibetan Women’s Association and the Canberra Girls Grammar School team helped them to carry raw materials from the road side, transport and mix cement, and then assist in the white washing of the walls and building.
Whilst at the project, the team stayed in the community hall overnight, and ate meals cooked by the local Tibetan women.
The girls also had the opportunity to interact with the local community in the afternoons and evenings during their time with the Tibetan community, and to their delight had the opportunity to play the local Tibetan women's soccer team in a friendly match. The Canberra team were a bit of a hit, with two local papers photographing the two teams after the match and publishing the photos in the local paper the following day!
Congratulations Canberra Girls for the fantastic work on the TWA building, and also for managing to make it into the local paper in Kalimpong!"
