Perfecting mud-brick techniques before off to Zanzibar
COUNTRY: Tanzania
PROGRAM: GapBreak
PROJECT: Building, renovation & conservation
WRITTEN BY: Tanzania Gappers 2012
Another two weeks have passed in Tanga with much to tell! Firstly, we realised
last week that our mud house building techniques were not quite right so we are a bit behind schedule. We quickly set to work redoing the walls, this time making them much smoother. Although morale dropped at the beginning, it quickly picked back up with everybody determined to make the houses as perfect for the Mama's as we can.
After plenty more digging and mud throwing we were able to begin rendering one of the
houses. This proved to be much more difficult than Eliphas our team supervisor made it seem! Lauren is an absolute star at rendering, and is potentially considering a career as a plasterer when she gets home.
Everybody has now had a go teaching and it has been really rewarding to see the classes progress in the past month. There has been two birthdays these past two weeks at camp which was cause for a few days of celebration. We once again visited our favourite Tanzanian club for night of dancing, not getting back until far too early in the morning.
On Sunday we ventured out for some spectacular snorkelling followed by a day of
swimming and watermelon eating on the most beautiful sand bank. We've become
experts at haggling at the market in town and no longer fall for the mzungu price!
Today we are all very excited after a four am start for our trip to Zanzibar, which will no doubt have a lot to update you on next time!
